Product Engineer, Tray & Packaging

The Product Engineer, Tray & Packaging  develops, designs, and tests sterile and non-sterile packaging solutions that ensure safe and effective presentation of Acumed products during surgery and protection of products during transport and storage. These systems include customized surgical tray systems that facilitate product reprocessing and re-sterilization as well as sterile packaging that maintains sterile barriers throughout the product lifecycle. Responsibilities include research, planning, idea creation and realization, concept development, specification generation, testing and validation protocols, as well as effective communication with team members, management, and customers. The Product Engineer, Tray & Packaging also supports packaging solutions after development by collaborating with cross-functional groups when manufacturing and quality improvements or other activities are needed.


  1. May lead small teams.
  2. Effectively Articulates and influences technical discussions cross-functionally.
  3. Collaborates effectively with external vendors to resolve issues related to projects.
  4. Communicates effectively with sales field reps and other external customers when needed.
  5. Presents to larger internal audiences.
  6. Creates new test protocols for more complex experiments. Applies and adapts appropriate standards.
  7. Performs critical CAD print/model reviews for tolerancing and manufacturability and translates outcomes into developing Best Known Methods (BKM's) and associated quality checks.
  8. Investigates and understands manufacturing requirements for projects assigned.
  9. Utilizes Root Cause Analysis tools (RCA) to investigate, analyze and resolve more difficult issues.
  10. May represent and lead CAPA's related to packaging
  11. Creates DCTM for the packaging section of their projects
  12. Identifies project/product risks and assigns severity and probabilities within the Risk Management (RMR) system.
  13. Participates in creating design control documents.
  14. Provides product training and trade show booth support at HCP and sales training functions for specific Acumed products.
  15. Applies a wider range of statistical tools to testing methods, interpretation of test results and conclusions.
  16. Researches and develops working knowledge of two or more technical specialties as assigned by manager.
  17. Understands how to leverage current manufacturing capabilities to product designs.
  18. Researches and applies Operating Room and Sterile Processing practices to support projects assigned


  1. Bachelors in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bio-Mechanical Engineering, or Equivalent
  2. 2 or more years of experience**
  3. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively with teammates and managers
  4. Ability to lead teams on small projects
  5. Ability to write test protocols & reports and conduct testing under limited supervision
  6. Applied knowledge of , ability to model and create drawings of simple complexity in CAD
  7. Knowledgeable and able to apply Level 1 GD&T principles to technical drawings
  8. Proficient in creating and managing ECO's through completion
  9. Knowledgeable and ability to apply basic root cause analysis techniques to solve issues
  10. Ability to read and understand journal articles, standards and present data effectively to peers
  11. Ability to read and understand patents preferred.
  12. Knowledgeable and able to apply and navigate the Design control process
  13. Completion and certification for Level 100 and 200 Anatomy and product training
